Warner Brothers confirmed today that the Batman sequel is indeed going to be called "The Dark Knight." That already raises my hopes by at least a factor of 10. And Christopher Nolan confirmed that Heath Ledger will be the Joker:
"I'm excited to continue the story we started with Batman Begins. Our challenge in casting the Joker was to find an actor who is not just extraordinarily talented but fearless. Watching Heath Ledger's interpretation of this iconic character taking on Christian Bale's Batman is going to be incredible."
Am I completely sold yet on Ledger as the Joker? Not quite yet. Do I trust Nolan's decision and his ability to pull it off? Sure. I remember tons of people thinking Bale as Batman was a bad idea and we see how well that turned out.
What's everybody's opinion/anticipation of Ledger as Joker?

Any movie that has Christian Bale and Heath Ledger in it is one I will rush out to see!
I've seen Ledger in comedic roles, in darker dramatic roles, and in lighter dramatic roles, and he's a very versitile actor. I can see him being able to pull this off.

I wouldn't have thought of Ledger for the Joker, but I have great faith he can do it. The morons that didn't like Bale for Batman.....whatever. I'm just grateful Holmes isn't going to be in it. I will so be seeing this! I love Hoffman--he'd be great as the penguin--but I don't like multiple bad guys because if one bad guy almost killed the hero but he handles several bad guys just fine--huh?

I'm not sold on the idea of Ledger. I, too, am dreading Andy Dick's inevitable "Brokeback Batman" spoof at the MTV movie awards. (Mark your calendars. I called it here.)
I would prefer someone more along the lines of Hannibal Lecter than Jack Nicholson. I know, I'm totally in the minority here, but I'm someone who didn't like ANY of the previous Batman films. Nothing. Nada. Zip. Zero. Zilch.
Which is why I like Chris Nolan so much. He stopped the hurtin' from Tim Burton. (I just made that up). I guess I owe Nolan the benefit of the doubt, but c'mon... Heath Ledger?
I personally would have liked Rainn Wilson to be considered. C'mon...Dwight is only a couple of mental snaps away from being the Joker anyway.

IF Ledger pulls this completely off, I don't think they will have Brokeback Batman because it won't be funny if Ledger owned the role -- is completely awesome. If he isn't, yep, there will definately be Brokeback Batman.
Hannibal Lecterish Joker? Uh, okay LH.
Yes, Tim screwed up Batman (but he only did the first two). It was good 'ole Joel that really started the hurtin' as you put it.

Yes, Hannibal Lecter-ish Joker. I don't mean that he ought to be a chasing Batman with a knife and fork, but I would like to see the same sort of charming-yet-psychotically-brilliant character.
But hey, that's just me.
And, for the record, I blame Tim Burton not only for hurting me with the first two Batman movies, but for Joel Schumacher as well. Life is much more pleasant if you can affix blame to one of those two.

I wouldn't have thought of Heath Ledger for the role of the Joker either. However, I do have faith in Mr. Nolan and if he is looking for someone not afraid of physicality, then from what I've heard... Ledger fits the bill. As Ms. C pointed out, Ledger has proved himself in the past that he can handle comedy as well as more serious roles. (Some of my faves being 10 Things..., Knight's Tale, Brokeback, & Candy looks promising)
Anyhoo... I've been racking my pea sized brain to think of someone else that I think could pull off my vision of the perfect Joker... and I'm currently drawing a blank. I, too, hope to see the more Hannible Lecter-ish (insert smile here) version of the Joker. btw- love the name "Laslo" --- have been waiting many years now to use it for my puppy's name should I ever have the space for a dog and that said dog doesn't radiate a different name. Sometimes animals really name themselves.
But I digress ....
I am hoping to see an intelligent yet sociopathic fiendish clown and not some prankster. Even as I say this... I cannot see Ledger in this role, but look forward to seeing his performance just the same.
I shall continue to think on this.... someone who can portray intelligence, wit, and relish in causing pain & imparting death on others. (Of course Johnny Depp is no doubt busy--- fighting his way through the Krachen's belly or being Sweeny Todd? perhaps, etc...) Truly though- he can do anything as far as I'm concerned. Johnny Depp is amazing.)
Josh Brolin as the Joker??? I wonder.....

Okay, now I understand what you mean about a Lecterish Joker. I certainly don't want a cannibal Joker -- but yes, while Joker is supposed to be a prankster, I too want a brillant and charming prankster and not Peeves from Harry Potter.
I would have DEFINATELY thought of Depp for the Joker. He could SO do that, but yes, I think he's busy and Ledger is already signed.

Okay, Not to diss the actor they've already got, but isn't Harvey Dent supposed to be a black man? Of all the good black actors around, WHY are we getting a white dude? Hey, I thought he was good in Thank You For Smoking and I am looking forward to seeing him in No Reservations, but he's not black. Whatever. I just think it's a bit weird.

Nope, the original Harvey Dent in the comics is white. For some reason, Tim Burton cast Billy Dee Williams as Harvey Dent in the original Batman. Christopher Nolan perfectly nailed this casting choice. This is easily my most anticipated movie of 2008.

JB, in ALL the Batman Comics Harvey Dent is white? I have a comic book geek guy friend who swears Dent is really black.

Unless there is some weird issue that I'm not aware of where there was a black imposter Harvey Dent then he was white UNTIL Tim Burton's Batman. Your friend's either wrong or mistaken. Perhaps he's thinking of Billy Dee Williams' portrayal?
