When I was a bit younger, I sought out classics such as Citizen Kane, Gone with the Wind, Casablanca etc. I like to think I've seen almost all of the classics and have a pretty good movie education. However, there are some significant omissions.
Which movies haven't you seen that you feel you should have? Did you skip ET?
For me it would be these. I plan to see them all at some point in the future but haven't yet (don't be shocked now!):
The Sound of Music
Rocky
North by Northwest
Indiana Jones (have seen the sequels only)
Karate Kid (all)
Serpico
Scarface
2001
The Jerk
Butch Cassidy
West Side Story
Nashville

The Usual Suspects
Reservoir Dogs
Vertigo
The Seven Samurai
One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest
Dr. Strangelove
I've seen bits and pieces of all these films, and I know the basic plots and a couple of the more famous quotes. I just haven't ever sat down and watched them all start to finish. And, there's probably a lot more that fall into that category that I can't think of right now.

These can be movies I *should* have seen, but not ones I necessarily want to or plan to see, right? Because there are a lot of those! LOL:)
The first one that comes to mind is The Godfather series - I've never seen any of it, and I really have no interest in it.
I can't think of any others right now, but my friends are always referencing movies that everyone in the world has seen except me. Most of them, I have no desire to see.

There are plenty of classic movies that I've never seen and don't really have any immediate plans to watch. Pretty much most of the black-and-white classics. Just a few:
Casablanca
Citizen Kane
Dr. Strangelove
North by Northwest
Lawrence of Arabia
Vertigo
And many, many more. Though I have seen To Kill a Mockingbird!
I also haven't seen most of the mobster classics - The Godfather trilogy, Serpico, Scarface, Goodfellas.
But to be fair, I think it's perfectly acceptable for people of our generation to not have seen many of these.
Let's face it - when we were young we were begging to watch Ghostbusters, not Casablanca. These are movies we'd have to seek out later in life. I just haven't had the interest to really seek them out.
I find it stranger when someone my age admits they haven't seen E.T., Star Wars, or Indiana Jones. I don't know how you could have a normal childhood without having seen these.
Oh, and Ms. Cali, I remember a few you haven't seen - any of the Terminator or Alien movies.
We should pick out one classic from the 80s/90s per week and discuss. Those who haven't seen said classic open themselves up to wedgies and ridicule.

It took me about 5 years to see Jurassic Park, so I endured the shocked expressions of many a friend for that one... same with Pulp Fiction, which I eventually saw, and subsequently loved. I just saw Apocolypse Now, and loved it up until Marlon Brando came on... 
Let's see... these are movies I haven't seen but want to:
The Godfather Trilogy (just haven't been able to get into them)

2001
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
More Hitchcock films (I've only seen Psycho, Rear Window, and The Birds)
The Graduate
...I've been catching up slowly, though...

I like Ray Liotta, so I'll see your recommendation, and I'll raise you a Freaks and Geeks. Saw One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest for the first time a few months ago. Somebody loaned me her DVD, saying I had to watch it. It's a'ight, but it's one of those "not really my kind of movie" films that I wouldn't feel a need to ever watch again. |

Oh, man... don't get me started on The Graduate. There are people who think this is the funniest movie of all time.
I don't get it. Not when Waiting for Guffman,This is Spinal Tap, Raising Arizona, and The Big Lebowski exist.

Wow, has anyone on here besides me seen the Godfather movies? I just saw 1 and 2 within the last 2 years and I thought I was late seeing them. Personally, I wouldn't bother with them. I was surprised at how slow paced they were. The stories completely underwhelmed me.
As far as modern classics go I've never seen Raising Arizona or The Big Lebowski. I haven't seen most of the older classics listed either. About the only ones I have seen are the first 2 Godfathers and Dr. Strangelove (I thought it was good).

Slap these two under the category of "Two comedy 'classics' that I haven't seen but EVERYBODY tells me how hilarious they are, therefore, I'm totally prepared to be disappointed when I finally see 'em." Try fitting all of that title on the file cabinet! Although I do hold some hope for The Big Lebowski since he's a Creedence Clearwater Revival fan who gets angry when his tapes are stolen. |

I doubt you will be disappointed by Raising Arizona--- it is a classic. I personally loved The Big Lebowski as well. I also thought that Fargo was incredibly funny though, if we're talking about the Brothers Coen. (Color me twisted if you want, but I defy you to show me someone who's seen it and didn't laugh - perhaps uncomfortably- even once in that film.
Mr Shade... fear not... I have seen The Godfather Trilogy and Scarface. That... apparently makes me the oldest official member on this board. smile. However, I would be lying if I said that I remembered any of the movies all that well. I saw them when I was quite young.
There are MANY movies out there that I only have vague memories of because I saw them first run as a child. If my dad wanted to see a movie... chances are us kids were going.
As a small child, my brother could recite every line to Ghostbusters.... for me it was Poltergeist.
I vaguely remember being completely disinterested and perhaps confused in 2001 as a child... or was it 2010?
I do feel like I should watch:
Citizen Kane
Casablanca (which I own for Petra's sake)
Gone with the Wind
I may have seen part of Nashville about 7yrs ago. Other than that... I think I've seen everything that's been mentioned. *(Most of which I'd have to see again in order to actually discuss them properly.)
I'm up for a movie of the week club... sign me up. lol/smile.

Not once. In fact, I am in the tiny minority of Coen Brothers fans who thinks that movie is one of their worst. Or, at least, their most overrated. This coming from someone who ranks many films by the Brothers Coen (I like the sound of that...) among my favorites of all time: Raising Arizona and Lebowski have already been mentioned, but I could just as easily mention The Hudsucker Proxy, O Brother, Where Art Thou?, and The Man Who Wasn't There. For me, Fargo is the "Coen's New Clothes," an ironic appelation, since usually the critics aren't kind to the Coens. I don't understand why the critics all wet themselves over this one. But they did, and it won a bunch of awards, and ever since then everyone tells me what a great film it is. I just don't see it. But, then again...maybe it really is me. |

I don't think The Graduate is a comedy. I would place it in my top 20 all-time movies, easily.

It's not just you, Laslo. Count me as part of the "I don't get it" crowd in regard to Fargo. I rented it a few years ago after hearing how GREAT and WONDERFUL and DELICIOUSLY DARK it was, and boy was I underwhelmed. The annoying accents and the fact that every character said "ya know" approximately 38 times per minute drove me absolutely crazy. And I don't mean that in a "Salma Hayek drives me crazy" kind of way. I'm not sure how many times I laughed, or if I did at all, since it's been so long since I watched it, but I do know I walked away greatly perplexed by the love showered on this one. I really liked O Brother Where Art Thou though. Oh, and I've never even heard of Nashville. Looking at the cast list on IMDb I now understand why. Why exactly is it being labeled a classic? |
