Re: Fargo - What?!? JB and Laslo - you didn't find yourself laughing (albeit guiltily) when the hostage flies out of the car with her head in the bag and tries to run away??? ...and maybe it's more Midwestern humor, but I related to the scene where William H. Macy has the worst meeting of his life, then has to go scrape the snow off of his car - and "losing it" after about 20 seconds.
And it's so quotable because of the accents! (The "ya knows" are supposed to drive you crazy! They really are part of the vernacular up in the M-west. Hmmm... for that reason, remind me never to introduce you to my family... ) Like I said, though, maybe it's regional humor. My favorite memory associated with it is when someone I saw it with (from the Midwest, mind you) got up at its conclusion, and said (sincerely and straight-faced), "We do naht tahk like thaat." - Ah, priceless. ;D
JB - I will someday watch Freaks and Geeks. I need to get in on the whole exchange system you have going with TG... or, you can just include it in the package with my Clyne CD.
Laslo - you MUST see The Usual Suspects. I'm surprised JB lets you post on these boards without having seen it.
I would also highly recommend The Jerk, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Butch Cassidy (see the "Funniest Movies of all time" thread ) - plus Casablanca and Citizen Kane, just to say you've seen 'em. They're not my favorite movies of all time, but they help you look well-rounded to the stuffy, film-going community.

I saw Fargo without being tainted by hype over it.... I loved it. Nashville.... now that you had me look it up... I have heard of it, but that was not the movie I was originally thinking of. Texas??? Paris, Texas? Nope... not that one, but I have seen that one. Wim Wenders. Oh.... I know... it is wasn't even anything like that.... I was thinking of The Last Picture Show. There was a not exactly a sequel many years later that had Texas in the title. Texasville, apparently. Sorry for the confusion. Nashville was Robert Altman.... I am actually not really a big fan of his. I did really like Gosford Park though. Most people I know thought it was a snore fest... maybe because I was a soc. major? I enjoyed it.

I thought Gosford was a snore-fest but I did like Jeremy Northam. The Last Picture Show did have a sequel, didn't it? Years later if I'm not mistaken. Liked 'em both.

Re: Fargo - What?!? JB and Laslo - you didn't find yourself laughing (albeit guiltily) when the hostage flies out of the car with her head in the bag and tries to run away??? I honestly don't remember that scene or hardly anything else from the movie. I'm sure I laughed at a few moments. All I really recall is my overall disappointment.

I must say you have all made me feel better about having never seen "The Godfather" movies. I kind of want to see them but not enough to pay for it. I haven't seen Casablanca and I feel like I should although I don't know why. Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid - yeah I should see that one. I've seen West Side Story and Gone With the Wind and I honestly think they are overratted. Okay fine - I see the importance Gone With the Wind plays in cenematic history but seriously folks - Don't you think it moves kind of slow? Now of the modern day classics - I haven't seen Pulp Fiction and I have no desire to. I saw the Big Labowski (please don't hurt me) and wasn't wowed by it. Haven't seen Fargo either and probably won't (after reading the above comments). I haven't seen Monty Python's Holy Grail all the way through - and I own it. I've heard it's funny but everybody says you have to be in the "right" mood to watch it. I don't know what that means. I can't think of anything else that I'm missing out on.

I vaguely remember being completely disinterested and perhaps confused in 2001 as a child... or was it 2010? I do feel like I should watch: Citizen Kane Casablanca (which I own for Petra's sake) Gone with the Wind I have seen 2001 in the last 5 years. I was so bored-it was crazy slow, it felt like the writer was trying to let the ship/computer "be" the story, but for modern audiences this is not enough of a concept to build a story around, maybe it was in 1968. I returned the movie without watching the whole thing and asked the cashier at blockbuster for that hour of my life back. Casablanca is great. It does require a little more patience than most current theater offerings. It is all about having to decide between true love and something bigger. Love the story and the characters. I really want to see Citizen Kane and I want to name my child "Atticus" after To Kill a Mockingbird. (My wife vetos that one, along with...let's not digress.)

Ugh. I started watching The Godfather because it was coming on tv...and I was bored to tears by the first 15 minutes. I still stayed until about 45-55 minutes later and ugh, I just wanted to kill some people for being so stupid/boring/annoying.
Got partly through Fargo and wasn't impressed. Sort of skip watched for a bit after that and finally dumped it.
Gone with the Wind was good -- but geez someone should have slapped her LONG ago....still, would only recomend to those who like romance/civil war movies.
Never saw Citizen Kane. Probably should.
Not interested in Casablanca.
OH MY WORD! LH, you haven't seen The Usual Suspects? That is an AWESOME movie. Truly superb acting, story, directing, etc. I can't find anything to complain about that movie. Seriously, you need to see it!

Ah... NBJ --- thanks for backing me up. Good point, too, btw. I am from Michigan. Not as mid west as say Minnesota or North Dakota, mind you.
Oh... and I'm ALWAYS in the mood for Monty Python's Holy Grail. There's a quotable movie for you. Usually though, I get strange looks when I quote it. I am a fan of British humor... some of my friends detest it and just don't get it. Oh well.
