Can we all band together and do write-in ballots for Josh Brolin for best actor?
Honestly, I'm not sure what to think of this year's nominations. Some good, some puzzling.
For best actress - definitely Ellen Page in Juno.
For best actor - well, nobody on that list of course! I am happy to see that Denzel was not nominated for American Gangster - I didn't really think he was all that great in that.
For best movie - I will be happy if either Juno or No Country for Old Men wins. Direction should definitely go to the Cohens.
As far as supporting roles - I love that the mom from American Gangster was nominated. For actor, definitely Javier Bardem. He was just so perfect as Chigurh (spelling?).
But Josh Brolin was definitely ROBBED. Oh well, he'll probably get nominated for playing Bush. LOL.

I'm still trying to get my head 'round the fact that "Surf's Up" could get a nomination for best animated film, while "Beowulf" got the shaft.
Similarly, they really ought to rename the Oscars "Let's only honor films that come out after late September." Where was "300?" "The Bourne Ultimatum?" Sheesh...
Oscar? more like Oscar the Grouch...
Also, yeah, I would have like to see Brolin get a nomination. Actually, I might be more upset that Tommy Lee Jones got a nomination for best actor that WASN'T for NCFOM.

Actually, I don't know when the cut off is, but it seems like this one had it's world premier/critics' screenings or whatever they count quite a bit earlier than the release to theaters than most movies do. Was that just to get it in in time for Oscar? Or was it in limited release first? I don't remember hearing anything about that, but I haven't really been interested enough in that movie to pay much attention.
I think with TLJ, they had to choose between his two movies, and since he had a bigger role in Elah (I assume), they went with that one. Also, they couldn't have NCFOM getting MORE nominations than There Will be Blood! They had to tie! Tie I say!
I don't think movies like 300 or Bourne Ultimatium are typical Oscar nominated films, unless you are thinking for costuming or editing or something like that. I was actually surprised Sweeny Todd was nominated, but there's always one movie like that I guess (Moulin Rouge, Pirates of the Carribean, etc).
I haven't seen any of the animated film nominees (nor have I seen Beowulf), and I don't think I will be seeing them just so I can know who to root for. Actually, I will root for anyone who isn't Brad Bird. That man has the most boring acceptance speeches I've ever heard (also incredibly boring? His commentary on The Incredibles. I seriously have never heard a more boring human being speak in my life).
Films that I haven't seen but have heard that they are more hyped than they deserve: Atonement (I can believe it - it looks awful to me. At least Kiera Knightly didn't get nominated for best actress. It shows the Oscar nominators actually have SOME taste), La Vie en Rose (I have heard that Marian Cotillard is actually not all that good), Lars and the Real Girl, There Will Be Blood.
Also robbed of a nomination - Amy Adams for Enchanted. They should have given Johnny Depp's nomination to Josh Brolin and given the musical nomination to her. Johnny Depp played the same role he always plays (quirky dark character who has scissors for hands or something. I don't actually have any desire to see Sweeny Todd, as I hate Tim Burton films). Adams at least brought a fresh take to a creative film.

TWBB got a very limited release at the end of 2007 just so it could be nominated. Josh got the hose job, but you're right; he'll probably be nominated for Bush. I really can't believe Juno got nominated for Best Picture. It was "cute" at best. Sorry, but any movie that uses the term "honest to blog" and uses "gob" instead of "mouth" in an attempt to "create dialogue" should be eliminated from contention. If it beats out No Country then I'll hunt down an Academy member and beat him with his cane. Zodiac should have been nominated. And I know 300 isn't a typical "Oscar movie" but it should be. But what I don't understand is how it didn't get nominated for Costume Design, Score, and especially Visual Effects. The Golden Compass received a Visual Effects nomination over 300? Give me a break. For a movie that cost almost $200 million, the visual effects in The Golden Compass blow major chunks. The only thing that movie accomplished was how NOT to get your money's worth with special effects. Once again, the Oscars blew it. |

Oh, JB, I really thought Juno was better than No Country. The screenplay wasn't as good, but the actors were able to sell it for me. I even liked Jennifer Garner in it, and she's been annoying to me lately (yes, lines like "honest to blog" were actually annoying, but again, I didn't think the screenplay was all that good). I think it's the film I enjoyed the most this year. I don't think it will beat No Country though, and I am good with that. I saw them two days in a row, and I think I only liked Juno better because 1) it was quirky & light hearted while still managing to be believable, and 2) I didn't have a migraine (I did have morning sickness - yes at night - though, so I guess they are even on that aspect).
Josh Brolin was the best actor, hands down, in anything this year.
Oh, and could we please have a nomination for best costume just for the white pimp suit & mustache from American Gangster? I think it was almost it's own character enough to be nominated for best supporting actor actually.
I liked Golden Compass, but I really don't care anything about special effects in movies for the most part. I like the effects in old movies (models and things like that) more than CGI anyway. I had no interest in 300, despite my beloved Phantom of the Opera starring in it, but it does look like it has some phenomenal effects.
I still need to see Zodiac. Maybe I will rent that this weekend. I think if it had been released later in the year (seriously, I actually thought it came out in 2006), it would have had a better chance.

I can understand you enjoying Juno more than No Country, but no way is it a better movie. In my opinion, of course. I'm pretty shocked it was nominated because it's not really what I'd consider an "Oscar movie."
Dumb & Dumber is perhaps my favorite comedy of all time, but I wouldn't say it was "Oscar worthy." I'm just interested in what the thought process was behind its nomination and if hype had anything to do with it. If Juno were released in January would we be hearing anything about it? Like you said, that could be what doomed Zodiac.
I'm in total agreement regarding the Best Costume. How awesome would it be if Josh is a presenter (which I bet he will be) and he struts out in the white pimp suit and the 'stache? We can all hope.

For What???
That movie put me to sleep.
I found it painfully long and a bit of a snoozefest. It looked like it was gonna be good, but it just didn't deliver for me.
I thought it was awesome!!! My favorite movie of the year for sure. I would love to see Ellen Page win an award for her performance. She totally rocked.
What's wrong with saying "gob" instead of mouth... it's like saying "shut your pie-hole". Maybe it's a Midwestern / Michigan thing. I didn't even notice where the story was supposed to have taken place, but they mentioned Soupy Sales. I watched that show as a kid... was it ever national??? Or just the Detroit/Chicago Market. (Like the Bozo Show... I saw it when I lived in MI- being close to Chicago, but never saw it in AZ or LA.
In anycase... aside from the "honest to blog" which I didn't understand, I didn't have a problem with the writing. I thought the characters were wonderful. I thought the movie looked like it would be funny, but it ended up being touching and well...
I thought it was much more than "cute". I really liked it. Will be buying it when it comes out.
I always think it's shady when a movie is released right before nominations... and limited release for the purpose of getting an Oscar nod. I have to say that TWBB didn't look interesting to me... Daniel Day Lewis or not.

For Best Picture because it, unlike Juno, is one of the 10 best movies of the year. Maybe one of my top 5. Loved it and didn't feel the length at all. Like I said, it got better, but the writing started off way too pretentious and was trying too hard. Would Juno really talk like a 50-year-old English professor? It was a little too reminiscent of those Dawson Creek kids quoting Proust and Tennyson. |

While I do like a good lobe now in again... NOT in the hain!!! Seriously, what kind of girl do you think I am!  My point was that she didn't make up gob. Might be kickin' it old school with that slang, but not new by any stretch of the imagination. I mean, "gob" is all shades of old. Did you love the soundtrack, too??? I think you are right about MN --- St. Cloud, that sounds right. Oh and btw... do you want to PARP (participate) in an on line book club w/ Mr. Shade and me? I'm gonna start dropping Steno briefs and see if I can get an Oscar... Can't let JB be the only one jumping on that bandwagon.   |

TG, Mr. C went right out and bought the soundtrack. It is fantastic!
Online book club sounds fun, but I'm not sure. You guys like fantasy a whole lot more than I do (seeing as I don't really like it at all...LOL). But I bet it will go better than the RL book club I am in (when I read the book in about 3 days, Mr. C read it after me since we share, one of our other friends is STILL reading it, 3 months later, and the fourth person in the club hasn't even bought the book yet - she is waiting for other friend to finish it so she can borrow it (I accidentally bent it open too far and a couple pages came loose, so we aren't loaning our copy out). Book clubs with my friends seem doomed to failure (we tried the club a few years ago...we're still waiting for one person to finish Harry Potter 5 - of course, he had to read 1-4 first, but still - we told him he wasn't allowed in the club this time around. LOL)
