So, JB hinted at this a bit last week, but I didn't want to post anything just in case it didn't actually work out, but last night...
I MET JOSH BROLIN!
Well, I didn't actually "meet" him, but...well, let me start at the beginning.
Last week I got a phone call from an old TYR friend who lives here in LA (that I don't see often enough). She had a couple tickets to a reading which Viggo Mortenson was participating in, and would I like to go? Oh, yeah, and Josh Brolin would be taking part in it too.
Of course, I said yes (then immediately called Johnny to rub it in). So last night we drove down to Little Toyoko and had some Sushi and Ramen before we heading to the Japan American Theater for the reading.
The reading was amazing - you see, a couple months ago, I saw this guy named Howard Zinn on The Daily Show (you know...with Jon Stewart) talking about a book he had written called "The Peoples History of the United States". He put together another book called "Voices from A People's History of the United States" which was basically a compilation of the writings, speechs, articles, etc. that he used in writing his book. It's pieces from labor leadings, abolitionists, feminists, Native Americans, and other people who shaped American History (from Columbus to people within the past few years). He stayed away from the "big" people that we read in history books (people like Lincoln, Washington, etc.) and used pieces from people we don't normally read in the history books in school - people like John Brown, Frederick Douglas, Susan B. Anthony, Helen Keller, Sojourner Truth, and on and on.
Anyway, last night's reading was a few pieces from the "Voices" book (the book is over 700 pages, so obviously they barely even got started). They touched on every topic at least once or twice (every actor did two readings, except Josh, who was in a third reading that needed two people). Josh played a revolutionary war solider (who's name I can't remember right now...my program is at home) talking in the 1820s about the promises that had been made to the soliders if they fought and how those promises weren't kept by the government. His second piece was John Brown's speech to the court after his conviction for the attack on Harper's Ferry. His third piece he played the judge during Susan B. Anthony's speech before the court after her conviction for voting in an election without being registered.
The other people who were there, beside Josh and Viggo were Marisa Tomei, Danny Glover, Sandra Oh, and several other people I've never really heard of. They were all fantastic though.
So, back to meeting Josh. We didn't get a chance to meet face to face, but when he was sitting there on stage waiting on his turn to read our eyes met across the room and I saw him mouth, "Tell Johnny Betts hello."
At least, I think that's what he said...
