news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20050803/ap_en_mo/movie_review_lawsuitSo I don't know what is craziest about this story - that they created a fake critic to write good review about movies that were already getting good reviews - or that they think that $5 is ample compensation for even one movie. Lets see, I saw A Knight's Tale in the theater 3 times (hey, there wasn't much to do, and it was a good movie) and I know I saw The Patriot in the theater, and I'm sure just about everyone on this board has seen Hollow Man... So whats that, at least $40 in movie tickets at the going rate of $8 a show? Lets say I caught a couple of matinees... $30. Still - that's $5 we are all entitled to. Go get it folks!

I saw all of those in the theater except for Vertical Limit. Since I enjoyed them all I probably won't take advantage of the lawsuit. Plus the fact that I think the lawsuit is a waste of court time and taxpayer money. I have serious doubts that the people who started this lawsuit only went to the movies based upon a quote from a critic they've never heard of.
On the other hand the money still has to go to somebody so y'all take advantage of this!

And like you, I enjoyed all of those movies that I actually saw at the theater ( A Knight's Tale, The Patriot, Vertical Limit, Hollow Man twice), HOWEVER, Sony is responsible for Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo, and for that they must pay. Plus, having to sit through the trailer for The Animal was enough to make me feel that Sony owed me something.

Hmmmm...when I saw The Patriot in the theater, the film melted twenty minutes from the end of the movie, and they gave us all free passes to any other movie in that theater. So I guess I got my money back from that one - unfortunately, there weren't any other movies playing in that theater that I wanted to see, and shortly afterward, I moved to CA, so I never got to use it. I would like my $5 back for that experience (plus, I hated The Patriot the first time I saw it. I needed a second viewing to learn to love it). I wouldn't mind getting my money back for A Knight's Tale either - not that I didn't love it (or drool over the huge poster of Heath Ledger that was on all the bus stops in LA, or the huge billboards that were all over the place) - but they cast Shannon Sossamon (sp?) as his love interest, and I believe they owe us all at least $5 for that. I didn't see Vertical Limit or Hollow Man so I guess I don't get that $5 back. Is anything else on the list?

I can't believe this!! This is typically one of those lawsuits where people only wanna get money. Don't tell me these people where traumatized by seeing those 'dreadfull' movies or have been in financial problems since. Or, like said before, they only went to see those movies because the critics said they where good. Come on! In my opinion this is a waste of time and money like MrShade said. Just like sueing a sigaret company because you got cancer by their sigarets or sueing MacDonalds because their coffee was too hot. If they really made false critics to promote false promises about the movie that's wrong, but I wouldn't say that would be a reason to sue somebody... just my 2 cents...

The fact that they made up false critics means they were engaging in false advertising, which is illegal. While I agree that a lot of lawsuits tend to be frivilous (and seriously, even if I hated a movie, I don't demand the price of my ticket - which in LA is now $11, so $5 won't really do much - back, because I know that different people have different opinions, and a critic and I won't always agree), I also believe that the company needs to be held responsible for their actions. Unfortunately, the only way to do that for a corporation is financially (unless you have an Enron type case, in which case jail time + financial restitution is appropriate). And the only way it's going to happen is if people sue, because it's very unlikely that criminal charges will be pressed in this case.
