So sorry... you are right. I had NO idea the original was Willy Wonka and not Charlie. That's stupid.

It's not stupid:) I STILL have trouble calling the new one Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. It will always be Willy Wonka to me.
And I have given up on actually seeing Charlie in the theater. There are too many other movies out right now that I want to see, and I'm rarely in the mood to go to the theater these days.

Okay... so I know this is an old thread, but I just have got to know... Did Johnny Betts ever actually see Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory? It is a classic and one of the movies that I quote on a monthly basis if not more often.
As for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.... visually interesting; great portrayal by Mr. Depp; was perhaps more true to the books. Songs were MUCH better in the first and even my love of Johnny Depp can't compete with childhood nostalgia. What's next... is someone going to redo Flash Gordon on me?
Sure... it could be done and no doubt even done well... but I love the camp & cheese factor of the Sam Jones version.
Oh... and to take the heat off of JB... my friend's mom has never seen The Wizard of Oz. Now THAT is baffling, since I tried to escape it nearly every year of my life... seriously ... it seems like they played that and The Sound of Music on t.v. just about every year of my childhood through early adulthood.
More childhood hang ups.... I should probably watch the Wizard of Oz one day and give it a chance. I hated it as a child and had to actively avoid it for most of my life. (Yet I own it on dvd & vhs...both unopened) --- it is a classic after all.

Awwwww....Wizard of Oz was my favorite movie pretty much since I was a teeny tiny kid, until Arsenic and Old Lace took it's spot more recently. I own it on DVD, and still have to watch it every time it comes on TV.
I don't know if JB ever finally watched Willy Wonka, but I did end up seeing the new one in the theater. It was the first Tim Burton movie I ever liked.

Yes, I finally did see Willy Wonka. Mr. Shade was kind enough to loan me the DVD.
I thought it was better than Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, mainly because the music was better and nowhere near as annoying. I probably would've liked it more as a child though.
As an adult, it's one of those one-and-doners. I saw it, was moderately entertained, but I see no reason to return to the well.

That's how I felt about Labyrinth.
Oh, wait, I hated Labyrinth, having only seen it as an adult (also in that category - Ladyhawk). If I had seen either one as a child, I probably would still love them.

I own both Ladyhawke & Labyrinth (I love that one, esp).... I am a Bowie fan!
This past Thursday night I was able to work in "Snauzberry, oo eva eard of a snauzberry" into normal conversation.... SCORE!!!
The ONLY reason that I hated Wizard of OZ as a kid ----- was that I thought Dorothy was simply wretched for telling the Scarecrow (in front of everyone else) that she'd miss him most of all. I thought it was sooooo mean. I'm sure that the movie is fabulous. I just remember being put off by that.

LOL! Dorothy wasn't the most tactful of girls, I'll admit ("I'm not a witch! Witches are old and ugly!" to Glenda...). I should watch Labyrinth again now that I'm a Bowie fan. Speaking of Bowie...his song Ashes to Ashes is on the cd I've been listening to at work. You know how songs can get stuck in your head, but for some reason, even though you know the real lyrics, they get stuck with different lyrics (I'm not the only one that happens to, right?)... So in real life, Ashes to Ashes goes: Ashes to Ashes, Fun to funky, we know Major Tom's a junkie... But in my head it goes: Ashes to ashes, Dust Bunnies, We owe Major Tom some money. I have no idea why!!!! It was funny at first, but it's actually annoying me now!
