*Rock and roll/heavy metal* - I hate heavy metal so I'm just going with Rock here - Tom Petty, Rolling Stones, whatever I feel like listening to at the moment.
*Punk/Goth(or whatever )* - David Bowie, Green Day
*Country* - old school country...Patsy Cline, Johnny Cash
*Pop(I think it is considered music)* - I tend to like one or two songs by several different people, but not everything by any one artist. I really like Olivia Newton John right now though.
*Hip Hop/rap* - DC Talk. Really, I'm not much of a fan of hip hop/rap at all.
*Classical/older* - most of the music I like is older:)
My Pandora.com radio station is set to play music by Tom Petty, David Bowie, The Dandy Warhols, Olivia Newton John, and Rick Springfield. It's been acting up on me lately though, so the past couple days I've been playing a new wave cd at work (I got it at Starbucks...I buy most of my music at Starbucks)

I don't really listen to particular genres, I just listen to what I like. A lot of stuff I like is hard to "genrelize." It'll be thrown into the "Rock" section but will usually be referred to as "Americana" by those "in the know."
So here are the main artists I listen to. I have their complete collections, except for Tom Petty, but I still own a ton of his stuff:
John Fogerty/Creedence Clearwater Revival Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers/The Refreshments Todd Snider Tom Petty
Obviously, there are other artists I like (Mellencamp, BR5-49, Collective Soul, etc.), and I can even be found listening to the occasional Kelly Clarkson and Gwen Stefani song (especially when there's an accompanying video), but I'm the kind of person who prefers to populate my CD collection with the artists I like most rather than buying CDs of 100s of other people who may only have a handful of songs I enjoy.

This is so funny--I was thinking about starting a thread along these lines today. Well, ya snooze, ya lose.
Anyway, tend to gravitate towards blues and blues-based rock. To that end, my iPod is loaded with artists like: Eric Clapton Stevie Ray Vaughan B.B. King Buddy Guy ZZ Top Led Zeppelin Aerosmith CCR
I also love progressive rock from the 70's, such as: Pink Floyd Genesis Rush Yes
In the pop/alternative group, I like: U2 Simple Minds Glen Phillips / Toad The Wet Sprocket
Can't stand Rap, Hip-Hop, or Country (like MsCali, I like old school Cash, Willie Nelson, Jerry Reed)
Obviously, There are lots of other groups that could have been mentioned, but there just isn't time or room.

Hey Huey, it's kind of rude to ask questions that you don't answer yourself. What are YOUR favorite artists? I'm a visual person, so I mainly own games, books, and movies. Not that much into music, and I'm very picky about that. I basically like a song here and there. Rarely do I like an artist enough to buy their CD. So....of the few CDs I own, it's mainly movies scores (Pirates of the Carribean 1-3, Dances with Wolves, Braveheart, LOTR 1-3), and a few Disney soundtracks (Beauty and the Beast, Mulan, Aladdin, The Lion King). I do have some artists I like more than one or two songs from. I pretty much like something (a song or two) from most genres except true country (too nasal), real rap (too profane and violent) and death metal (yeah...... ). For most genres I'd have to list the song I like because I don't know or don't really care for the artist. But for these genres I can actually list and artist I like: Metal: Metallica (Black Album) Rock: 3 Days Grace, Nickelback, U2 (Joshua Tree), Linkin Park, Cranberries Soft Rock/Pop: Brian Adams, Kelly Clarkson, Shania Twain Classical: Mozart, Bach, Beethoven New Age: Enya

Gosh, there are so many...my tastes tend to run in the rock/pop/dance categories: ELO, Night Ranger, Yes, Queensryche, The Fixx, Depeche Mode, The Cure, Linkin Park, All American Rejects, The Outfield, Kool & the Gang, Earth, Wind & Fire, Gin Blossoms. There are a bunch more, but I don't want to bore everybody.
As far as Christian groups go, there are few that I like: Jeremy Camp, Circlslide, Storyside B, and Mercy Me to name a few.
