So what movies did the critics lavish praise on, but you hated down to the very depths of your soul? I'll start with Lost in Translation.
I absolutely cannot believe it has a 94% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes! That's exactly what's wrong with mainstream critics. This was just one dreadfully boring movie where nothing, I repeat, NOTHING happens!
Bill Murray has no reason to complain about not getting the Best Actor Oscar - he didn't deserve it for this snooze fest. No laughs, no plot, nothing at all to keep you interested.
He should stick to movies like What About Bob?

I would have to agree...
And I haven't read any reviews that are calling Garden State this year's Lost in Translation, but Johnny tells me they are, so I would just like to dispel this myth once and for all...
Garden State = Interesting and funny movie about a guy's journey of self discovery.
Lost in Translation = Depressingly boring movie about a guy who looks sad all the time which goes nowhere and has not plot but was probably supposed to be about his journey of self discovery or something.

I have an objection to the bashing of Lost in Translation.
I'll grant you, they could have cut out so much and made that movie shorter (and better), but I thought the relationship between Bill Murray and Scarlet Johannson (or however you spell it) was very well done. I found the characters to be very real.

Well, there are real people who are incredibly boring, so I will give you that.
Heh:) I just love to bash that movie, because all the rest of my friends loved it. But they wanted to walk out of Zoolander, so what do they know?

"Let me answer your question with another question: how many abidigitals do you see modeling?"
Zoolander should have won an oscar.

You see, I loved Moulin Rouge. I'm sure Ms. Cali will agree: "Who is that doing this awful version of 'Your Song?'" "Uh, Ms. Cali, that's that original by Elton John." "I don't like it. Give me Ewan!!!"
I found it to be funny, artistic, different, and entertaining.

Ah, I LOVE Moulin Rouge. Still. After seeing it at least 300 times. In fact, I was just thinking on my way to work today that I need to watch it again (I'm pretty sure that thought was prompted by the fact that I've been listening to the soundtrack nonstop for the past two weeks or so).
Yeah, Ewan's version of "Your Song" is so much better! Heh...I had forgotten about that Rhi:) I was SO sheltered from non-Christian music as a child:)
So, yeah, I don't think it's overrated at all...I think it's just the type of movie that some people like and some don't. I happen to love all of Baz Lerhman's movies (Strictly Ballroom is one of the most underrated movies ever in my opinion), and his opera La Boehm (sp?) was amazing too.
Oh, and if Ewan is in it, and it's not Star Wars, it's pretty much guaranteed I'll love it:) Has anyone seen "The Long Way Around" on Bravo yet? It's Ewan and a friend riding their motorcycles from England or Scotland or somewhere (I missed the first episode) to New York across Asia. It's actually really interesting!

I DONT GET BRAVO. I'm planning a revolt on my cable company.
Except - I'm not paying for my cable (and they know about it) so I don't feel justified to gripe.

Well, a lot of the time, Bravo shows are on NBC too, so maybe NBC will pick that one up:)
In the meantime, if you need a Ewan fix, I highly recommend Down With Love. Another movie the critics panned (if I remember correctly), but I think is brilliant...especially if you are a fan of the Doris Day/Rock Hudson movies:)

"Lost in Translation" was one of those films that the critics were afraid to tell the truth about. They knew it was hollow, vapid, and utterly devoid of life, yet they feared looking foolish in the eyes of their fellow critics.
It's yet another example of why you shouldn't listen to "professional" film critics--they only review films for other critics.
That having been said, my vote for a truly overrated film would have be "Gladiator." It was okay for what it was, but it certainly wasn't better than "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" In 2000. Don't even get me started about the sham of "Shakespeare in Love" beating "Saving Private Ryan"....
I hope Harvey Weinstein saved his receipt for that Oscar...

"Lost in Translation" was one of those films that the critics were afraid to tell the truth about. They knew it was hollow, vapid, and utterly devoid of life, yet they feared looking foolish in the eyes of their fellow critics. You nailed it. Clones! They're all clones, I say! I managed to find a copy of the "Professional *cough* Critics' Handbook," and one of the rules of thumb is the more pretentious a movie is, the more praise is to be heaped upon it. Don't even get me started about the sham of "Shakespeare in Love" beating "Saving Private Ryan".... I was reminded of that the other day, and the reality of it hit me all over again. Absolutely unbelievable. I'm also quite baffled by Chicago's Oscar win, but I know a few gals here love musicals, so I'll tread lightly... for now.

Ugh...I couldn't even make it all the way through Gladiator. I was so bored an hour into it that I turned it off.
I thought Sideways was quite overrated this year...I liked it, but I didn't think it was as good as everyone said it was.
I also thought The Incredibles was a bit overrated. I liked it, but I didn't love it.
