I just thought I'd share a little story... I guess for the woman involved it could be considered a horror story, but for me it was nothing but humorous...
I was at a movie recently with a friend who brought along a friend from out of town. We were sitting through the previews, and one of those Best Buy "turn your cell phone off" commercials, disguised as a preview, comes on. They're a movie theater staple down here.
The premise, for those of you who don't know of them: a preview begins, telling of an epic story along the lines of The Last Samurai or Dances with Wolves... Then, when the "preview" gets to the climactic scene, and it's all quiet and suspenseful, they play the Nokia cell phone tune, and the people in the "preview" look around and say "What was that?" "It's coming from the audience!" And then the buffalo they were hunting scatter, or the enemy they were fighting wins because the heroes were distracted, etc. Then they flash the "Don't ruin the movie. Turn off your cell phone" line. Cute, right?
So, this commercial starts, and the second the Nokia tune comes on - before the joke can even pay off, my friend and I witness her friend (who has obviously never seen these commercials before) DIVE into her purse like there's no tomorrow - in complete terror - to turn off what she thinks is her cell phone. It was a funny sight - my friend and I staring in confusion while this poor woman freaks out in the semi-darkness. And then laughing our behinds off at her embarrassment. Good times. ;D
I have seen those commercials a hundred times, and that is the only time I've ever seen it fool anyone. She must not get out much.
