OK everyone... this is one of my biggest pet peeves in the world: Often rhymes with Coffin. Do you hear me? there is no T sound in the word Often. How do you pronounce "Fabric Softener"? **Fa-brick Soff-en-err** Very good class. Now, how do you pronounce "Soften"? **Soffen** Excellent. Now the tricky word. I know the root of often is "Oft" but LIKE THE WORD Soften, whose root word is Soft, it DOES NOT have a T sound in it. Of*en. Of*en. Often Rhymes with Coffin. Check with Mr. Webster if you don't believe me. Class Dismissed.

I understand your frustration. And I'd like to add that the 's' in Illinois is SILENT!

I'd like to add that the 's' in Illinois is SILENT! THANK YOU, Johnny! That annoys me to no end when people don't leave off the "s"!

Yes, sadly, there are SO MANY ignorant people in the world now, Webster must Compromise its standards.
I found this through a link on Webster.com in AskJeeves:
People striving for sophistication often pronounce the T in this word, but true sophisticates know that the masses are correct in saying “offen.”
