--- Män som hatar kvinnor
(which I guess translates into something like Men Who Hate Women) In any case, it is based on the first of Stieg Larsson's Millennium books.
I can't wait to read the book now. I went through much turmoil on if I should rush and finish the book before I saw the movie or not. Finally, I decided to wait as someone pointed out I would probably enjoy the movie more if I hadn't already read the book. As books are almost always better than the movie, I decided to heed that advice.
I really liked this movie, although I would strongly warn people that there are some rather disturbing scenes that can be hard to watch. It is a definite R rating. If you can't find a baby sitter, for the love of all that is good and holy, STAY HOME. I only saw one (maybe two) semi-young person (s) in the sold out theater and as one was reading the book & one had a UK copy of the 3rd book, I have to assume that they either looked younger than they were or are mature for their ages and their parents feel they can handle the underlying violence against women theme often repeated throughout... hence the title, I guess.
There is a minimal amt. of foul language (although it's not in English so perhaps I just didn't notice it that much) though I think I may remember reading some subtitled F-bombs. Can't be positive though. And there is a bit of nudity. There are some somewhat gruesome crime scene photos, but what really earns the stern "R" rating is the violence & rather realistically simulated sexual violence.
As disturbing as a couple of the scenes were, there is a nice little mystery/crime story/thriller here. I have been wanting to read these books for awhile now. I have the first two and look forward to the US release of the 3rd and I guess final book. (I had heard that a 4th book was either finished or almost finished, but due to legal quibbling between the publishing company, his companion/girlfriend (for over half his life) and Mr. Larsson's relatives-- who inherited most of his estate due to him never being officially married or having a proper will -- that it won't be released. I'm not sure how much of this is true or not. Sadly, what is true is that author/journalist Stieg Larsson passed away at a fairly young age, before seeing the success that his Millennium Trilogy has garnered.
I've heard great things about the books. The movie was quite good (as was the acting)--- a little long (slow in the beginning), perhaps... though I didn't notice/mind too much. Hard-to-watch scenes aside, I enjoyed this movie.
*** Oh, and if for some reason you can't deal with subtitles (which I found easy to follow except for in 2 spots when the background was really light--- the subtitles were in white), then I suppose you can wait for the inevitable remake that according to imdb is in development.
I say, see the original Swedish (?) version. Who doesn't like a story of a troubled hacker helping a journalist who has gotten himself into some trouble or his own, solve a missing person's case that turns into so much more??? In truth, is this the best movie ever made? No. Is it going to blow your mind or change the world? Probably not, but I left the movie with plenty to discuss and not having felt like I wasted my money. Was it the best movie I've seen so far this year? No... but that movie has "Dragon" in the title as well (ie- HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON. )
