JB, I ask you to explain the impossible. WHY are people so stupid?
So, I'm sure some people have seen this:
movies.yahoo.com/feature/aziz-ansari-imax.html
I've just read the article, having no desire to listen to the profanity filled rant of the actual guy, but his issue is valid, and it's something I've been saying since our digital IMAX was installed last summer. The size is NOT true IMAX. It's about half the size but definately bigger than a regular theater. The sound is better than the regular theater sound, but still not true IMAX.
And IMAX has definately lowered its standards. The digital projectors themselves were ripped off another company, messed around with, the programing changed, and then these were manufactered at a breakneck speed with minimal if any tests. We've had so many issues (hardware and software but mostly software) with the dual projectors (it takes two to cover that huge screen) and tech support is spotty at best. IMAX has created patches on patches to "fix" problems, and these patches actually serve to create more problems. In fact, we were having major audio problems and a tech was supposed to actually come to physically check the entire system before Star Trek opened. Yeah, we're still waiting.
I don't know about the $5 extra price, we only charge $2 more, but the fact that people can't know until their tickets are torn is a LIE. First of all, if the theater you've always gone to suddenly has IMAX, um, yeah, they didn't redo the building they just installed it in the existing structure, that's your first clue. Second, you can always ask questions. The box office cashier should be able to tell you the size of the screen and whether it's film or digital or find out for you. I work in projection myself and I have had staff call me on the radio asking the size of the screen to answer a guest. Third, even if your ticket is torn, you can still return the stub and get a refund within a certain amount of the movie's start time. My theater goes so far as 30 minutes into the actual movie itself, not including trailers. It's called problem solving and thinking, people. Ever heard the phrase consumer beware?
Now I'm also having issues with the stupidity of the people in charge. How did these people become CEOs I wonder? I'm reading so many articles, various studio CEOs and company CEOs and all that and these people are so out of touch or just plain stupid that I just have to wonder, how in the HECK did these people get in charge? People complain about presidents but these people are elected by Americans with the only qualification was registration to vote, so it's understandable. What are these companies doing? IMAX saying it doesn't matter? It doesn't matter that IMAX doesn't mean what it meant before? It doesn't matter that theaters are pissed about their shoddy product and lack of tech support? That consumers are pissed that there are two definitions of IMAX now?
Sigh. I feel for the world.
