Mr. Ang here. Saw this one with a coworker on an afternoon.
Alright, so I've not seen the original, so here are my uninformed thoughts. As a horror/suspense movie, this one fell a bit flat. The bad guys were not particularly intimidating nor fear inspiring, even considering the horrible death and pain they inflicted on others.
My issue with the film mostly rests with the rape scene. While it was thankfully free of "official" nudity (other than a quick shot of the daughter's derriere from a side angle), it was graphic and long. That made it incredibly disturbing and uncomfortable for viewing. The director could have gotten just as powerful a point across from a handful of other options. The other violent scenes were not over the top, though their gratuitous realism made them more disturbing than the more typical Hollywood fare of gore.
The family's reaction to their daughter's condition and the arrival of the guilty parties as their "guests" was quite dark. . . maybe a little too dark from their character perspectives. I'm not saying that if I found my daughter barely clinging to life after being raped, shot and left for dead and that the culprits were staying as guests in my home that I would be any less vengeful or brutal towards them. . . I just don't think that my after-the-event response would be quite so methodical (though maybe that was part of the doctor in the father's character. . .).
At any rate, it killed an hour and a half, though not one I would really recommend. At least go to the bathroom and get some snacks during that one scene (it's probably long enough that you could) if you DO go to see it.
