Not a huge fan of comedy or a fan of Henry Commick Jr either (he's not as flat as Keanu Reeves but I find Reeves more entertaining to watch and he usually picks better movies), but I was paid to watch this so I forbear. This was stupid. It was so completely predictable, so full of lowbrow humor, so chock full of sterotypes, etc that it was truly unbearable to watch. Sad but I kinda expected as much.

Um... yeah. I had not recently read FM's review/warning before renting this movie. (Although... my Spidey senses were telling me that I should push eject after watching the previews section of the dvd. The formula that states how bad or good a movie is can be determined proportionately to the reviews that are placed on the DVD, etc... holds true in this instance.) Sometimes, my friends and I would have bad movie night and rent 2-3 awful movies for fun. Usually the movie is so deliciously bad that it is good... or that we have such a good time making fun of it that it's money and time not as poorly spent as you might think. This movie is NOT one of those movies. This movie was soooooooooooooooooooo bad. Forget the unoriginal story that was cut from that often tired "romantic comedy mold". Here's the thing. I can forgive the predictability and cheesiness (hey, I like cheese!) that plague most movies that fall into this category. What a good romantic comedy must have is some likable characters that have chemistry. Yeah, that's right. The main "couple" should have chemistry. We should like them and want them to get together. I think that if this turd burger had ended w/ a murder-suicide, I might have enjoyed it more. FM and I don't always agree on movies and I often feel bad when a reviewer (even JB) just completely dumps on a movie or calls a particular actor or director out. I mean these people are human and have feelings. Since JB has stated, himself, that only 7 people actually read/follow his site or these boards (and lately he's not even one of them ) ... well, I guess I won't feel too bad. Unlike FM, I actually do like Harry Connick, Jr. and felt sorry for him. (See Hope Floats if you want to see him in a romantic comedy role ... heck, even that P.S. I Love You movie--- which compared to this was fabulous --- and if you've seen that movie, well... that statement should speak volumes to you!) Renee Zellweger --- okay, I'll give you Bridget Jones and perhaps even that Cameron Crowe movie. Come on though... this was just. She was just... well, it was painful watching her performance at times. Not like she was given gems to speak or anything. I'm not a writer... I have no talent for it. I swear to you though... I am not responsible for this pile of poo. There are some talented actors (Fallon, Simmons, Frances Conroy-for Pete's sake!) in this movie that appear to be making the most of what they were given. Still... not even close to enough. (Go see Fargo if you want to laugh at endearing characters w/ a Minnesota accent, etc.. Well, I consider Fargo a comedy, but I'm twisted!) I wouldn't wish this movie on anyone. In case anyone is in doubt about how I feel about this movie, I'm saying that you should SKIP IT. (Forget about renting it, don't even watch it if you are up one night with insomnia and it's on cable or something!) *** I also saw Confessions of a Shopaholic (as part of movie night). It probably wasn't fabulous... more, cute. I couldn't give a fair assessment of it, though, having just finished watched New In Town. It was brilliant in comparison. My final thought... feeling like a romantic comedy? The Ugly Truth is coming out in a few weeks. It looks as though it has potential. The Proposal is out now and it HAS TO BE better than this. Want something in the video store? Try "I Could Never Be Your Woman"... for a released straight to video movie, which I'm pretty sure it was. (In fact, I am pretty sure it's on HBO On Demand right now.) Anyway... that's my suggestion or just watch a movie you've already seen and know is good. If you should decide to view this movie after reading the adamant thumbs down from FM and me, well... then you deserve it!
