I for one think you handled the situation very well. You were not mean, rude, or disrespectful towards the man who was clearly trying to hustle you. You used logic in your assumptions, but did not judge or go wild and think he was trying to rob you. Not to mention, your questions tore him apart in what I can only assume were minutes. Thanks for the lesson ! Haha, this reminds me of the scam where drug addicts offer to fill up your car for half the price that shows.

Seriously, JB? This actually happened to me the other day too! Mr. C was filling up my car (which, by the way, took TWO transactions at the payment machine...it won't even accept enough cash in one transaction to fill up a car anymore). Some guy asked us if we could give him a couple bucks to get enough gas to get to work.
We just said no, but as we were leaving I was ranting to Mr. C that I work hard and budget for gas money. This guy was asking for gas money so he could get to work - so obviously he works. Why wasn't he budgeting for it?
People, either pay for your own gas, or hit your friends up for money (the ones who either know you work and are just going through a tough time and are good to pay them back later, or the ones who do drugs and party with you and don't care if you need gas money to go to work or to go to your dealer's house and refil your stash). Don't hit up strangers at the gas station.

whenever i notice someone about to try to put the pinch on me, i turn the tables and make sure i ask them for money first. it messes up their routine big time.
