Okay, Y'all -
Did anyone catch the Emmys last night?
[glow=red,2,300]TiVo-ers Beware![/glow] I thought that Conan did a great job hosting. (Then again, I'd think that Conan O'Brien did a great job of buttering toast, so take that for what it's worth... )
I especially loved the opening sequence - nice use of LOST, The Office, House, 24, etc.
The boys surely would have enjoyed the scenery... For Laslo - Evangeline Lilly, for Johnny - Jennifer Love. Both looked pretty good, and that's a HUGE compliment coming from me.
For me, my Kiefer crush resurfaced after a bit of a hiatus ( I don't watch 24) with his humble acceptance speech... but John Krasinski gave him a run for his money during the whole 2 minutes he was on stage...in the background. Grrrr...
I don't know about you guys, but I always look forward to the "Comedy/Variety Program Writers" category. Always such clever presentations... Hmmmm. I guess that's why they're nominated!
I was bummed that my picks for guest appearances didn't win (Henry Ian Cusick in LOST, and Kate Winslet in Extras - a role that changed the way I'll see her forever!)
So, anyway, what did you all think?
(I can't help being a sucker for award shows... though, in my defense, I indulge in them mostly to make fun of the celebrities. These were just the strong points... )

Conan's the best Emmy host ever. Oh, and the opening skit was the best Emmy skit ever. There. That should tell you my thoughts on the show. Oh, and let the record show that Evangeline Lilly is also in my top ten list, so there's really no need to single out Laslo in that regard! In fact, I might dare say she was even hotter than JLH last night Though that's definitely a tightly-contested competition. I was upset that Conan's show didn't win an Emmy though. Rip off! Loved the bit with Bob Newhart in the sealed tube. I fast-forwarded through most of the acceptance speeches (gotta love the DVR), but I did see the one from one of the winners in some comedy writing category. I think he was one of the My Name is Earl writers. Anyway, his whole "Here are the people I don't want to thank" bit was funny. Oooooooh, and I can't believe you neglected to mention this little tidbit, NBJ! They were announcing the nominees for "Best Mini-Series," and when they showed Into the West the short video clip they showed contained a scene with Josh in it! That's right; a 6-hour miniseries and what do they pick for their 5-second footage? Something with Josh "Da Man" Brolin in it. TNT knew who their Emmy hopes hinged on. So anyway, let's just make Conan the host every year, and make sure Evangeline and JLH present in tight dresses every year, and I'll be fine.

I totally forgot to mention that! And that was truly the moment that inspired me to post this in the first place! I guess I got carried away and forgot. But I knew you'd also catch that one, JB. Your Josh Brolin radar wouldn't have let that one slide by. I, too, was proud. Why wasn't he nominated for that role???
I had to spread the joy around! I know that both you and Laslo enjoy ELilly, but you are completely alone in your JLH fascination, so I thought it only fair to throw Laslo a bone on that one. Wait - uh... yeah.
Yes to Conan! No question. I actually work with some ladies who can't stand the man and much prefer the "comedy" of Jay Leno. I'm thinking of quitting.

Um, WHAT?!?!?! Please tell me that these women are over 50. Someone who thinks Jay Leno is funny. Huh. That's a new one to me. Just try not to associate with them too much.

I usually can't stand Conan (hate his show - for the record, I also hate Leno and Letterman), but he was the perfect host. The opening sequence was indeed the best I've seen, and I loved the Bob Newhart bit - I like that it wasn't over the top silly, and that other people were able to get in on the joke (John Stewart's second acceptance speech when he announced that he was going to let Newhart die and then stopped talking for a few moments was my favorite). I was really disappointed that the Colbert Report didn't win its categories, but the Daily Show was a good replacement I guess. Usually I am really annoyed at the people that are nominated/win, but this year, even though most of my favorites didn't win, I had no problem with the outcomes. I like the new nomination process. I just wish House had beat 24 for best drama!

I was really disappointed that the Colbert Report didn't win its categories, but the Daily Show was a good replacement I guess. Nope. CONAN SHOULD HAVE WON! Jon Stewart just comes off as too smug. I like Conan's expertise at self-deprecating and off-the-wall humor. Usually I am really annoyed at the people that are nominated/win, but this year, even though most of my favorites didn't win, I had no problem with the outcomes. I like the new nomination process. I just wish House had beat 24 for best drama! I never did get a full grasp of what exactly the changes are in the nominating process, so I don't know if overall it's a good thing or not. What I do think is that there are definitely flaws in it when Lost, a winner from last year, doesn't get nominated this year even though there was no drop off in the show's quality. I also felt that Jason Lee got the shaft. He should have been nominated in the "Best Comedic Actor" category. Come on, Kevin James and Charlie Sheen over Jason Lee? If I'd had my way, it would have been a two-man race between Lee and Steve Carrell. I don't get the hype over Tony Shalhoub and Monk. I watched 10 minutes of it one day and honestly thought I was watching an old episode of Walker, Texas Ranger until Shalhoub showed up. I couldn't believe how cheesy it was. And how does someone get nominated for a role that's only 14 seconds long? Now THAT is just ridiculous. Sorry, but I had to vent. Since Ms. Cali decided to be so nice in her comments, I figured somebody had to pick up the slack and rant a little!

I did think it was odd to give a comedic nod to "Lost" when the Emmys basically snubbed the whole show. Then again, these are the same TV geniuses who didn't know what to do with a truly brilliant show like Arrested Development.

That depends on who you ask! (I really hate Lost these days). Okay, so the changes go something like this: Previously, nominations came from the members of the Academy - which meant that people just nominated the shows they liked. Or they nominated the shows that sent out the best Emmy screeners (I got a nice Into the West boxed set, complete with coffee table book this year! I love having friends in the industry!) Now, for the bigger prizes (most of the ones in the telecast), the nominations came from "Blue Ribbon Panels". They were presented with clips from each person/show that desired a nomination. That put the onus on the individual actors/producers of the shows/networks or whoever to pick the best segments to present to the panel. That meant that people who are only in a miniseries for 14 seconds may be nominated, if it was a spectacular 14 seconds, over someone who just didn't pick as good of a clip. It is definitely not a perfect system, but I think it's about time something different was tried. I like that the nomination process isn't based on whoever gave out the best screener package, and rather than spending a ton of money trying to outdo the other shows in that presentation, the nominees are having to spend a bit more time making sure they pick clips that really show their skills. Or something like that. Honestly, the reason Lost wasn't nominated is because the episode submitted for review by the panel (the season premier if I remember correctly) was so full of plot holes, confusing storylines, and too many questions. It's the same reason I hate the show now - nothing is ever resolved, and things just get more and more convoluted. I don't mind having to follow a show to know what's going on, but I would like to be rewarded with some answers now and then. J.J. and crew have answered some of the smaller questions, but the big mystery just gets deeper and deeper with no end in sight. And JB, you really should give Monk a chance! Tony Shaloub does a fantastic job on that show - and has been consistently fantastic in that role for years. Watching it for 10 minutes does not really give you a good idea of how good the show is - for all the inconceivable storylines, and dumb mysteries, it's such a fun show because of him. (It's one of the few season passes I have on my DVR). edited to say: Walker Texas Ranger had a better theme song, though! "The eyes of the ranger are upon you!" Monk's theme song is written and performed by Randy Newman. That says it all, I think.
