I heard a blurb about this on the radio this morning, and couldn't find very much about it online, but a newspaper in Torrington WY had this to say about the National Pony Express Association:
The first riders will leave the Patee House, 1860 headquarters of the Pony Express in St. Joseph, Mo., at 4 p.m. on Sunday. The last rider will deliver the mail to Pony Express Plaza at 2 p.m., on June 22.
The route west will be over 1,840 miles through 10 states; Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, Nevada and California. The mail will travel 24 hours a day, non-stop, and be relayed by over 550 riders and horses.
The mail will be carried in the cantinas (pockets) of a mochila – a leather square fit snugly over western saddles. The commemorative cachets will honor the history of the Bauchmann Canyon Station in East Canyon Creek, Utah. Letters are available to the public at 1860 prices for five dollars.
The event will be the 25th National Ride by the NPEA. It will commemorate the Central Overland and California Pikes Peak Express Company of 1860-61. The Pony Express was a private mail service, which carried letters and telegrams on the Central Route for 18 months. The owners hoped to prove the route through Salt Lake City, Utah, and win the government mail contract.
They did not receive the contract but created a legend and history of brave and daring riders. To honor that legend and history, the trail was added to the National Trails System in 1992. The National Park Service preserves and interprets the trail and history.
