Okay... so I rented this one as I had seen it before in a video store and thought for a second that it might have been based on the book by Andrew Vachss, which it wasn't. Although, his Burke series does often deal w/ unsavory folks such as pedophiles and other folks who prey upon children. *** Before you think I'm twisted, he's a good guy (more or less) who's mission is too clean the streets of such filth. (Tangent)
Okay... so back to the movie (2005); I don't often like vigilante-based films, but this one affected me on some level. The premise is simple enough---> 32 yr. old guy chats on line with a 14 yr. old girl and they agree to meet. She goes back to his place and the predator becomes the prey.
I'm not saying this is the best movie ever made, but it was definitely thought provoking and the acting was superb. Patrick Wilson's character is unsavory from the get go. A 32-yr. old man has no business chatting up/ getting involved with a 14yr. old girl, yet at times in the movie you feel bad for him and almost find yourself not exactly rooting for him (that'd be going too far); let's say you find yourself hoping he gets out of certain situations.
Ellen Page plays the 14yr. old potential victim turned victimizer brilliantly. I'd say she's someone to watch.
The movie doesn't really have that many twists in it that you don't see coming a mile away, but the quality of the acting makes this one worth watching--- although subject matter might make it hard to watch for some.
It's not one for everyone, that's for sure. I don't know if I can say I "enjoyed" it, but as I said it affected me and made me think.
I mostly see movies for entertainment... but it's nice to watch ones (even if they're jarring or deal w/ sensitive subject matters) that stir the senses and make you think.
