What are your favorite horror/scary classics?
I'll avoid being redundant and attempt to leave Hitchocock off this list...my list has both old and new classics...
Invasion of the Bodysnatchers Village of the Dammed The Others War of the Worlds
I think classic horror films are great - I can't watch anything with too much blood or gore though! I STILL have issues with Scream 2, and I saw that in 1997!

The Ring .. I know it's not really a classic, but that movie scared the living sh%t out of me. I'm not easily scared and this is actually the only movie that made me feel very uncomfortable in a loooong time.

I debated putting The Ring on my list - I think it could definitely be considered a modern classic! It was one of those movies that stayed with you; because it turned so many ordinary, every day things into something really scary (the phone ringing, a ladder, a window, etc.).

All right, so you can't call all of these classics, but these are my recommendations for Halloween weekend. In no particular order.
1) Signs 2) Session 9 3) The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (the new one, w/ Jessica Biel and her tight jeans). 4) The Ring 5) The Others

*Wow...that subject BARELY fit - I wanted to put "..." after it, but only "." would fit!*
Anyway...
The Ring Signs The Others
Because one day they will be on the list of classics.
I would add The Village too, although that only scared me a little, so...
I haven't seen the other two, so I can't say whether they are classics or not. I can guarantee that I personally will never know. As I will never know if any of the Terminator, Alien(s), or Predator movies (or movies featuring any of the three fighting any of the other three or also possibly Freddy or Jason) are classics. My pathetic goal in life it to avoid those movies at all costs (my goal to avoid Star Wars Episode One could not last, unfortunately).
And on the list of "Movies that are incredibly boring when they aren't scaring the **** out of me":
Deliverance
I saw that for the first time the other night - but I only listened to the second half from the other room, because it was just too much. The music is great though. I told Mr. Cali (who has never been to the south) that I will be playing that when we get off the plane in Memphis at Christmas (or maybe I'll wait until we are driving up the backwoods country road to my mom's house in Mississippi).

I haven't seen the other two (Session 9, TCM), so I can't say whether they are classics or not. I can guarantee that I personally will never know. Oh, you can guarantee that, huh? Well, I plan on getting the Session 9 DVD (it'll most likely have to be through the Internet), and when I make my next trip out to CA, I'm bringing the DVD! Then I'm coming over and forcing you to watch it! Then I'll brag about toppling one of your personal guarantees. This is gonna rule.

Hellraiser Alien The Thing Invasion of the Bodysnatchers Signs
Not as scary as the above, but are in a list of my favorites and I feel they are classics:
Evil Dead Evil Dead 2 Army of Darkness

Blair Witch. While it doesn't keep me up at night, and won't freak me out while camping, unless I *intentionally* go camping in witch-infested woods, it kept me on the edge of my seat. It raised the heartrate a little... I enjoyed it in a scary-movie sort of way.
Signs freaked me out a good bit. I still want to build a bomb-shelter beneath my house just because of that movie!

While these may not be "horror' films exactly they sure scared and disturbed the crap out of me. "The Gift" and "The Missing", both starring Cate Blanchett, and also both haveing two word titles... hmmm....

Overhyped and overrated. There were some good moments, particularly the ending, but I didn't sympathize with the annoying characters at all. I went in expecting the scariest movie of all time, but that's not what I got.

Jaws-- I saw it as a kid, and still have trouble with the last scene where Robert Shaw gets eaten...
Alien-- Knowing that Ridley Scott threw fake blood on the actors during the dinner scene to enhance their reactions is just so cool...
The Shining (Kubrick's version) -- Possibly the scariest movie I've ever seen. I would not reccommend being 9 years old when you see it for the first time, though (like I was).
Psycho (Hitchcock's...NOT Gus Van Sant's seventh level of Hades guaranteeing rip-off) --Not for the shower scene, although that is definitley a classic. My favorite chilling scene from that movie is at the very end when Norman's mother has taken over his mind and she says "I wouldn't even hurt that fly"

Hey, if you watch Jaws backwards, it becomes a movie about a shark who keeps vomiting people up on the beach...
Think about it...

Man, you just gave away the ending!!! Now there's no reason for me to ever watch this!!!! Just kidding...it's Mr. Cali's favorite movie of all time (it beat Superman, so that tells you what an awesome movie it is), so I have seen it several times. It really is great! Since you like Jaws so much, you should check out www.angryalien.com - there's a great "reenactment" of jaws on that:) Psycho is my favorite Hitchcock movie (and I haven't seen the remake, but I will one day just to say I did...but only after I finally get to see Psycho 2, 3 & 4...heh). The end will definitely give you goosebumps!
