Character development. They were trying to show that hobbits are gay. They definitely accomplished that purpose. I watched the two movies within a couple of weeks of each other, and I can confirm that there were more LONG stretches between conversation in FOTR. In fact, I timed some of the non-dialogue scenes and they went on for between 1 and 2 minutes. But you're right, a lot of the dialogue was pretty boring.

JB tried to claim that most of the FOTR that didn't have dialog - it was just them walking around showing off cinematography. I fell asleep during FOTR. 3 hours of lush scenery makes Steph drowsy! I managed to stay awake during The Two Towers, but that is b/c a coworker and I kept making funny comments. Still haven't seen ROTK. The uber-geeks at work say it ruled though!

Amazingly, not even the fact that Mr. Shade played Sam could increase my interest in the LOTR movies.

I'll tell you what a classic is. EDDIE AND THE CRUISERS! Not only is it one of two good Michael Pare movies, which makes it very unique, it has all that great music. You can easily look past the fact that Tom Berenger is about 30 years older than Michael Pare in real life but his character is supposed to be younger than Pare's. This is all due to clever hair: Young Berenger = hair covering forehead; Older Berenger = hair not covering forehead.
Seriously, this is one of those movies I will always watch if I come across it while scanning channels, even though I have the DVD. There are fantastic memorable lines:
"My way, with the Caesarian."
"That's the most you'll ever get out of me Word Man. Ever."
"The other day, I buried one of my best friends. He was the best sax player I..I ever heard. And they tell me I gotta come up here and entertain you people now. I don't think I'll be able to do that."
Long live Eddie Wilson!

Open Range was a good movie - I just found the opening 20 minutes to be boring and the very end after the big gunfight was poorly done (Kevin Costner can't seem to make up his mind whether he's going to stay or go).
Gladiator is definitely a classic - it's in my top ten.

I wouldn't consider Titanic a classic. I happen to love the movie, but it's one of those movies that lost its magic after it was off the big screen - video/dvd can't really do it justic.
I haven't seen Open Range, so I don't know if it would be considered a classic...I'll have to look into that:)
Gladiator was another movie that I was bored by...I ended up being so bored, that an hour into it, I had to just turn it off. I've never seen the rest of it.

Kevin Costner can't seem to make up his mind whether he's going to stay or go. It was pretty obvious that Costner is leaving for a short period of time but will definitely return. He just hates having to leave Annette Benning at all.

Whereas *I* would run as far away from Anette Benning as I could get.
She scares me.
I really need to see Open Range though!
Did anyone here see The Alamo besides me and Johnny? (Although, I saw the better version before they butchered it!)
Whenever the previews came on, my friends (all LOTR fanatics) would tell me The Alamo was my LOTR...
I never did see the final version though. I want to remember it in the version I loved so much. For ME, it's a classic.

The Princess Bride is a classic. Titanic isn't, even with the best picture oscar, but neither is American Beauty. ROTK was cone well, nice way to wrap up that trilogy. I liked Open Range, and I really liked Silverado. Get the DVD of it and watch the documentary on the making of...it's good.

Movies that win the Oscar for Best Picture are usually WAY overrated. I think the only Best Picture Oscar winner whose DVD sits in my collection right now is Braveheart.
It's been a long time since I've seen Silverado. I think I need to give it another watch.

I must agree Silverado, as a film, is excellent and the DVD is top notch. American Beauty... no. Titanic, nuh uh. Holy Grail? Hell yes. The Princess Bride? Pushing it, but ok... I just got the License To Drive DVD. There is a classic. Corey Haim AND corey Feldman!?! With Heather Graham as the babe?! It doesn't get much better than that for an 80's cult classic. The DVD is great too... lots of extra goodies... The Princess Bride is a classic. Titanic isn't, even with the best picture oscar, but neither is American Beauty. Did anyone here see The Alamo besides me and Johnny? (Although, I saw the better version before they butchered it!) Yes, I did. That movie is really underestimated. You never hear anything about it. I really loved it though, kinda had the feeling I was the only one. Anotherone I consider to be a classic would be Groundhog Day. I think that's one of the great ones by Bill Murray. Fantastic film, one I would just watch over and over.
