Dude...yellow sweaters are NOT gay! Just for that, I'm going to knit you a very very ungay yellow sweater. If I ever get around to it. Don't hold your breath.
Some people think Sam & Frodo were gay. I say there's no way they were gay - they were way too boring for that!

Yes, JB, the Image Hosted by tripod logo is quite gay. I don't get how that helps your case any though. I'm off to watch my season 3 videos. I finally plugged in my VCR (it only took me 1 1/2 years to do it) last weekend. It's been a nice TYR fest this week.

Well, I wasn't sure where to put this, but since this thread was started as a topic about "The Golden Compass", I guess I'll say it here. Randomly looked up new stuff on Snopes and ran across this, something that is TRUE for once: snopes.com/politics/religion/compass.aspJust a warning to anyone who has any religious convictions, you may be offended by the content of the movie/book series. That information was enough to put me off. Not going to see this one.

I just checked the link and to be honest... it sounded a bit skewed to me. I thought I'd do some more digging. What I found was that what Snopes said does indeed hold some truth... but is not necessarily entirely right, either. I really haven't much knowledge of Mr. Pullman or his books. (I almost read one of them at my mom's house but she wasn't finished with it before I had to fly home.) I was intrigued though. Anyway... I did some "Googling" of my own and now my interest has definitely been piqued. I DO believe in God... but I also believe in faeries and Santa Claus. Smile. After reading an article in the New Yorker about Pullman, I’ve decided that THIS is my next series. With the next Stephenie Meyer book (Twilight series) not out yet and the screenwriters on strike.... I think that THIS will be my next purchase. I don't want to make any snap judgments until I read the stories for myself. My mother is a librarian and I've seen the lists of books that get banned every year across this Great Nation of ours. Books that I'd never have thought anyone would have to fight for --- that others would find vile and corrupt. I also grew up Catholic and I still have a great fondness for that influence in my life. I thank that upbringing for who I am today... both for the good things I was taught and the injustices I found not in religion, but in Religious Institutions. I still separate the two to this day. Even as a Christian, I agree with some of the quoted comments in the article. I DEFINITELY believe that people should research this before letting their children see it, but I feel that way about pretty much all materials. I love stories... ones that entertain and ones that make you think. I related to this part of the article: However, the article does go on to say lots of things that do support the snopes link. I will say this: As a believer in God, I do find it important to try to see others view points. It's vital for any good debate. smile. This is the link to the article for anyone interested www.newyorker.com/archive/2005/12/26/051226fa_factI will suspend further judgment until I read the books. ( That is if the first one holds enough interest for me to continue. ) Is it wrong if I say that I hope it does??? I really DO need a good book fix right now. I'll be sure to tell you what I think. When does this movie come out??? I better get reading. Smile.

I asked Mr. C about the snopes artical after I got it as a mass forward from my aunt (who I really really dislike, and can't stand when she sends stuff like that around, because she isn't the type who would actually do their research into it at all...she gets the e-mail and just passes it on. I'm pretty sure she doesn't even know what Snopes is). Anyway, Mr. C has read most of the books in the series, if not all of them. I don't really know. He and our friend start talking about them and I zone out. They hold absolutely no interest for me. So, none of the books have anything to do with athiesm. It's not that "God" doesn't exist. It's that the god in the book is a false god, a charletan who has gotten everyone to believe that he is god. Philip Pullman may be an athiest. He may think people who believe in God are stupid, and he may think that all of our children should be athiests and should never be exposed to religion (I don't remember if that's what he believes. I really should read the snopes artical again, but I am not going to). But he does not push any of those beliefs in the books. It's a fictional, fantasy story with good guys and bad guys, just like almost every other fantasy story I've ever heard of. Anyway, not having read the books myself (and not planning too, but only because I am sure I would be incredibly bored by them), I can only say what Mr. C has told me. TG, I am definitely interested in hearing what you think after you read the first book.

MsCali:
Well... I've been busy. Reread all three books of the Twilight series, reread some old Sidney Sheldon & Mary Higgin's Clark books --- as that was all I could find to read at the time. There was a line in one of them that was so hysterically funny, I thought I was going to wake everyone in the house. I also re-watched the extended LOTR trilogy. Now I'm reading two books. Patrick Carman's, Into the Mist and then as promised, The Golden Compass.
*** It took me a few chapters to become fully committed to the latter. I'm now on Chapter 8 and to the point where I've directed my full attention (well... as much allotted reading time as I can manage, anyway) to this book.
I should have a report for you soon. I wish I had it on audio book for my 7.5-8hr car ride home tomorrow.
Anyone know when the movie hits theatres? Does this movie come out next week or the week after???

What was the line? (Was it in the Mary Higgins Clark book? It's been a long time since I've read any of hers, but back in the day I had read them all).
I am currently reading "What to Expect When You're Expecting" and "Eating Well When You're Expecting". Hee. If anyone is on my myspace friends list, don't post about it there - I haven't told people at work yet (expect my direct supervisor...I had to leave suddenly to go to the doctor on Tuesday, so I had to let her know. But she has promised not to tell anyone else). I'm up for a new job at work, and I don't want to tell anyone until I have the offer - but HR is taking FOREVER to get it to me.

The line was actually from Sidney Sheldon's, If Tomorrow Comes and it was something like, "... she was in the center of a rainbow." That was supposed to be a steamy love scene, btw.
There was a rainbow, a volcanic eruption, a calm, and then a tempest. That about sums it up. I think someone likes the Weather Channel a bit too much.
Back to the subject of this thread: The Golden Compass
I did finish the first book and am reading the second book. I am going to try to have all three books done before the movie comes out. I've got a lot going on w/ school right now, so I might only get part way into the third book.
I am getting excited to see the movie now. My sister has decided to hold off on reading the book for fear of ruining the movie.
6 more days... I need to get crackin'.
I think that the previews look like it could be good... I hope so.
